The equality of Jesus to the Father

Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.

The equality of Jesus to the Father John 5:19-26

19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.

  • Jesus right here is claiming to be equal with the Father in the things he does, saying what ever the Father can do Jesus can do equally

John 5:17 But Jesus answered them, "My Father has been working until now, and I have been working." 18 Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God. The jews understood JEsus was making Himself equal to the Father.

  • Because verse 20…

 20 For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does;

  • There relationship shows equality

and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.

  • What are the greater works than these?
    • It is the raising of the dead from verse 21

21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will.

  • God has the power to raise people from the dead, that is one of His works and great work obviously
    • And since Jesus is equal to the Father he too can raise people from the dead
    • In addition to this work of raising people from the dead physically, He can raise them from the dead spiritually.
      • Jesus can transform our lives personally… what an incredible work he can do because some people are really messed up but He can do it.
        • He resurrects us spiritually
        • The Bible tells us in Romans 3:23 “we all have fallen short of the glory of God” by sinning
        • Ephesians 2:1-7 and we were dead in our trespasses and sins but He makes us alive
          • Jesus touched our lives and changed us and made all things new.
          • He has given us His Spirit to live in us.
            • Romans 8:11,
            • Acts 5:32
            • 1 Corinthians 3:16
            • 2 Corinthians 5:17
  • First we saw Jesus equality in His works and secondly in his judgment vv22

22 For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son,

  • Since there is equality between the son and the Father, God has given all judgment to the Son.
    • Doesn’t it say God is the judge?
    • Abraham who is considered to be a fries of God said:
      • Genesis 18:25 "Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?"
        • So is God the judge? YES
          • They are both judges…
            • They are both God; 1 John 5:7
  • We have seen equality in His works
  • In His judgment
  • And in verse 23 in His honor

23 that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

  • This is talking about their equality
  • If you honor God you must honor Jesus, this is what he is saying,
    • In John  8:24 Jesus says
    • 24 Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.
      • The Jews honored God but they did not honor Jesus, they did not honor Jesus as the Messiah
      • Many groups pay respect and honor to God, but Jesus they do not honor.
        • They are equal and one in the same

In verses 24- 30 we will see the authority of the Son.

24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.

  • The authority of the Son is seen is His ability to give life.
    • One passes from death to life by believing.
    • One cannot just believe in God he must believe in Jesus Christ also.
      • If you do you will receive life eternal

25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live.

  • The authority of the Son is seen in His ability to give life.
    • Listen to how one receives life, it is by hearing the voice of the Son of God.
      • And they will live eternally.
      • How do we hear His voice?
        • By His word,
  • Romans 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
  • 1 Peter 1:23-24 born againBack to John 5:26

26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself,

  • The ability to give life comes from the father but listen up…
    • This life is not just for the spiritual but for the temporal as well
      • This is for you and I today, everyday
        • John 10:10 …Jesus came to give us live more abundantly…

Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.

— Jeremiah 33:3
